#16 Statesmen head to Elmira for crucial UVC matchup

The Hobart volleyball team came in at No. 16 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll. The Statesmen are ranked for the seventh-straight week in their inaugural season. Hobart also ranks No. 14 in the Inside Hitters national poll and No. 21 in the FrogJump Volleyball weekly rankings.

Hobart (16-10, 2-4) is coming off a 1-1 week that saw the Statesmen fall 3-1 at MIT in a United Volleyball Conference matchup on Wednesday before sweeping Manhattanville in nonconference action on Saturday. Graduate student Andrew Kim led Hobart with 31 kills (.473) and 13 digs through five sets. He added four service aces and one block in the split.

The Statesmen will be back in action Wednesday, March 27, when they travel to Elmira to close out their conference regular season schedule. First serve between the Statesmen and the Soaring Eagles is set for 7 p.m. in Speidel Gymnasium.

ABOUT THE STATESMEN
  • Kim leads the nation in kills per set (5.56) and points per set (6.29). First-year Daniel Sappia chips in 3.48 kills per set which ranks sixth in the conference and 32nd in the nation.
  • First-year setter Zack Farren leads the conference and is sixth in the nation in assists per set (9.89).
  • Kim (3rd, 0.51) and Sappia (7th, 0.36) rank top-10 in the UVC in service aces per set. They have combined for 73 this season.
  • The Statesmen lead the league in digs per set (9.99). First-year libero Gavin Meador leads the team and is fourth in the UVC with 2.45. Kim adds 1.84 per set and is eighth in the conference.
  • First-years Nate Magni (58) and Grayson Getz (44) have combined for 102 blocks this season out of the middle.
  • As a team, Hobart ranks second in the conference and fifth in the nation in assists per set (11.66). The Statesmen are also second in the UVC and ninth in the nation in kills per set (12.36).
  • Defensively, Hobart leads the conference in opponent kills per set (9.80) and is second in opponent assists per set (9.24).

ABOUT THE SOARING EAGLES
  • Elmira (9-11, 1-5) is coming off a 3-0 conference loss at then No. 6 St. John Fisher.
  • Edwin Sosa leads the team and is fourth in the conference in kills per set (3.86). Jordan Peiser ranks seventh in the conference in the same category (3.19).
  • Sosa ranks fifth in the UVC in points per set (4.47).
  • Max Cohen runs the Soaring Eagles offense from the setter position. He is fourth in the conference and 25th in the nation in assists per set (9.28).
  • Peiser leads the team with 22 aces this season.
  • As a team, Elmira ranks third in the UVC in digs per set (9.78). Alex Vega leads the way with a league-leading 2.87 per set which ranks 21st in the nation.
  • Dylan Vargas has the team-lead with 46 blocks on the season.
