#3 Herons head to #23 Cortland for top-25 showdown

The third-ranked William Smith lacrosse team hits the road for the first time this season when it makes the 68-mile trip southeast to take on 23rd-ranked Cortland on Saturday, March 9. Opening draw is scheduled for noon at the Red Dragons' Grady Field.
 
William Smith is 3-0 this season and is coming off a 16-9 win over Geneseo on Wednesday. Senior midfielder Maddie Montgomery scored six goals and matched her single-game record with 12 draw controls. Junior Maura Smeader went the distance in goal, making a season-high 10 saves.
 
Cortland (2-1) is looking to bounce back from an 11-10 overtime loss to Ithaca on Wednesday. Toni Cashman scored five goals in the loss. Margaret Morgan played all 62 minutes and made nine saves.

ABOUT THE HERONS
  • Montgomery leads William Smith with 15 points on 14 goals and an assist. She also has a team-high 19 draw controls.
  • Sophomore Natalie Daniels is right behind her with 13 points on 11 goals and two assists. She has 14 draw controls.
  • Senior Allie McGinty leads the Herons with eight assists.
  • Defensively, juniors Livvy Von Heill and Nicole Pio share the team lead with three caused turnovers each.
  • Smeader has played every minute in goal for William Smith. She is 3-0 with a 6.92 GAA and a .553 save percentage. She has a team-leading eight ground balls.
 
ABOUT THE RED DRAGONS
  • Cashman leads Cortland with 13 goals and 13 points.
  • Amy Hoeffner is right behind her with 11 points on seven goals and four assists. She has a team-high 14 draw controls.
  • Isabel Adams leads the defense with eight caused turnovers and 12 ground balls.
  • Morgan has played every minute in goal. She is 2-1 with an 8.50 GAA and a .447 save percentage.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Saturday's game will be the 28th meeting between William Smith and Cortland.
  • The Herons hold a slight 24-23 edge in the series, but it is deadlocked 10-10 in Cortland.
  • Last season, William Smith defeated Cortland 13-5 in the Poole Family Dome. Montgomery led the way for the Herons with five points on four goals and an assist. McGinty had three assists and Von Heill had four caused turnovers. Smeader made 10 saves in goal.
