Hobart Basketball earns awards for service

5/3/2024 9:32:00 AM

The Hobart basketball team was recently recognized for its efforts on behalf of the Geneva Public Library. On April 26, the Statesmen were presented with the Library's Volunteers of the Year award and on April 30, they received The Community Service Award at the Hobart and William Smith Student Leadership Recognition Awards hosted by Student Engagement.

Over the past five years, Hobart basketball has played an important role in the Geneva Public Library's annual book sale. It's estimated they have moved 150,000 books, setting up tables, stacking books, and then assisting with breaking down tables and moving books again at the end of the event. The funds generated by the book sale support the library's outreach efforts.

At the Student Leadership Recognition Awards, the team was described as, "great examples of what it means to be a student-athlete and engaged community member on this campus."

Additionally, forward Niko Lutz and his housemates were honored as the Theme House of the Year. The award recognizes a theme house that has fostered a vibrant and inclusive living environment, promoted community engagement, and organized memorable events that enrich the residential experience. Living in the Community Engagement House, Lutz is a co-manager of the house.

One of the house residents described it as a place where, "we can all work together and help each other. I cannot express how much this house has changed my life and my college experience."

On the court, Hobart basketball was 22-6 this season, opening the campaign with 10 consecutive wins. The Statesmen earned a share of the Liberty League regular season championship, going 13-5 in conference play, and captured the program's fourth Liberty League Tournament Championship with a 63-55 win over St. Lawrence.

Hobart earned its sixth NCAA tournament bid, drawing a tough assignment in the first round, defending national champion Christopher Newport. The Statesmen trailed by just seven at halftime, but the Captains pulled away in the second half.

The Statesmen also excel in the classroom. Six players earned a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic Team and four received Academic All-District honors.
