Heron rowing to compete in the Head of the Charles

10/17/2025 9:20:00 AM

The William Smith rowing team will be back on the water on Sunday, Oct. 19, when it heads to Boston for the Head of the Charles Regatta. The Herons will compete in the Women's Collegiate Fours event, which is scheduled to begin at 1:59 p.m.

The Head of the Charles is one of the largest regattas in the world. This year marks the 60th year that rowers from around the world will race down the Charles River, which separates Boston from Cambridge. This year's HOCR features 74 events, 853 clubs and 2,688 entries that will compete on a 3-mile route that runs from Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse to just short of Northeastern University's Henderson Boathouse.

William Smith won a bronze medal in the women's collegiate four in 2008. Last year, the Herons V4, powered by Ava Lee '25, Isabella De Nes '25, Leah Wiebe, Meghan Bartholomay and Olivia Sainsbury, finished sixth overall. The Herons will be the sixth boat off the line at this year's regatta. Lizzy Whitney, Bartholmay, Aubrey Ryan, Kate Abdalla and Linnea Darius will power this year's four.

In addition to the bronze in the collegiate four in 2008, William Smith also won a bronze medal (2013) and a silver medal (2012) in the collegiate eight race.

This year's racing will be live streamed on the Head of the Charles YouTube page.
