Statesmen to host NCAA tournament opening weekend

The Hobart soccer team is one of 16 hosts for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship. On Friday, Nov. 14, the Statesmen will take on Messiah at 11 a.m. The contest will be followed by Calvin and Grove City at 1:30 p.m. The advancing teams will meet on Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
Tickets are $6 for general admission, $3 for senior citizens, military personnel and students (ages 13-college), children ages 3-12 are $2. Children under 3 years old are free. HWS students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with a valid HWS ID courtesy of HWS Athletics.
 
Hobart is ranked 16th in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll. The Statesmen are 13-0-5 overall and earned one of the 43 automatic bids to the NCAA tournament after beating Vassar 2-1 in the Liberty League Championship yesterday. Hobart is making its 10th appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Statesmen are 5-8-2 in their previous nine trips to the dance.
 
Messiah is 11-7-2 overall this season. The Falcons captured the MAC Commonwealth title on Saturday, beating Stevenson 2-0. Messiah is making its 33rd NCAA tournament appearance. The Falcons are 93-18-6 and have won 11 national titles.
 
Calvin enters the tournament with a 16-3-1 record. The Knights earned an automatic bid to the tournament after claiming the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship on Saturday. Calvin is making their 22nd trip to the tournament, posting a 39-22-7 record in its previous 21 trips.
 
Grove City brings a 15-2-2 overall record into Friday's match. The Wolverines claimed the President's Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday. Grove City is making its fourth appearance in the tournament and first since 1980. The Wolverines are 1-2-0 in the Division III tournament.
