Hobart hosts Rochester Thursday to open 3 match homestand

The Hobart tennis team will be back in action Thursday, April 3, as it welcomes the University of Rochester to Geneva to begin a three-match homestand. First serve between the Statesmen and the Yellowjackets is set for 4 p.m. in Bristol Field House.  

Hobart is 4-7 on the season and is coming off three challenging matchups with No. 5 Case Western, No. 4 Denison and No. 17 Kenyon at the Ohio Invitational last weekend. Rochester enters the nonconference matchup with a 6-4 overall record and is coming off a 7-0 victory over Houghton.

ABOUT THE STATESMEN:

  • First-year Marco Olmos leads the team in singles play with a 6-4 record in dual matches and is 4-3 in the No. 6 spot.
  • Seniors Hyat Oyer, Nick Grosso and Rahul Vallabhajosula follow closely behind with five dual match wins in singles play. 
  • The pairing of Oyer and Vallabhajosula lead the team in doubles play with a 5-3 record in dual matches and a 3-0 record from the No. 3 spot.
  • Grosso and junior Nick Fischer are 6-6 overall in doubles play and are coming off a 7-5 win against Kenyon in the No. 2 spot. 

ABOUT THE YELLOWJACKETS:

  • Rochester is led by Andy Liu who is 8-2 in dual matches with a 6-2 record from the No. 5 spot.
  • Alan Wang is 6-4 on the season from the No. 2 spot, while Krish Venam is 4-6 from the No. 1 position.
  • The Yellowjackets are highlighted by the doubles duo of Wang and Surya Rajamani who are 3-0 in the No. 2 spot and 1-3 in the No. 1 spot.

ABOUT THE SERIES:

  • This will be the 33rd matchup between the Statesmen and the Yellowjackets. Rochester leads the series 19-13, including an 8-6 advantage in Geneva.
  • Hobart has won seven in a row against Rochester, including a 7-2 victory in Rochester last year. Oyer secured wins in doubles and singles play to lead Hobart in the win.
