Hobart competes at Holy Cross Invitational

4/20/2025 9:33:00 AM

WORCESTER, Mass.—Hobart Rowing team competed at the Holy Cross Invitational on Saturday, April 19. The Statesmen, whose varsity eight was ranked 24th in the latest IRCA/IRA poll competed against three nationally-ranked teams on the 2,000-meter Lake Quinsigamond course.

At the invitational, Hobart competed against No. 12 Boston University, No. 17 Temple, No. 18 Holy Cross and Marist. Rowers battled 12 mph headwind and choppy water. All Statesmen crews powered off the start and led or were in the lead pack of crews racing in the early going. Adverse racing conditions are not strange to Lake Quinsigamond - a firm 12 mph cross wind created textured water and 'fetching' deteriorating conditions during racing. Each lane had its own circumstances depending on the side of the course the crew raced.

VARSITY EIGHT
  • Hobart's 1V was composed of Sam Hyman, Pantagiotis Giannakopoulos, Charles Watroba, Colin Mester, James Feeley IV, Lex Lauer, Sean Madden, Nicholas Short, and Aidan Vanek.
  • Jumping off the start line well and marginally ahead of the field, the crew working hard found it difficult to stay on terms with lead crews. An efficient base pace eluded the crew as the battle against the difficult conditions and lead crews working away from them.
  • With the roughest conditions in their race lane, the Statesmen bested Marist by nearly 6 seconds, ending in 4th place in a time of 6:27.76.

SECOND VARSITY EIGHT

THIRD VARSITY EIGHT
  • The Statesmen's 3V was driven by Leah Henning, Jayden Dasher, Ryan Agans, Kire Richardson, Álvaro Paulin, Holden May, Ryan Behar, Brogan Dietsche, and Tibor Teleki.
  • The Statemen's 3V really powered off the start and remained on terms with the lead crews early and longer into the race.  Boston University, Holy Cross and Hobart crews  moved away from Temple mid race.
  • The Statesmen crew maximized their preferred lane draw and led Holy Cross for a majority of the race. In the final push to the finish line the Hobart crew was bested by the home course crew Holy Cross and only two seconds separated them at the finish line.

FOURTH VARSITY EIGHT
COACH'S CORNER
"Proud of the Statesmen crews today in spite of the final results," Head Coach Chris Kerber said. "We handled the adverse conditions as best we could but raced hard the full length of the course. It was a race day of honesty – the wind and water situation tested our guts in the arena of competition. It certainly exposed our technical capabilities as well as our ability to race together as a crew.  All worthwhile as we attack our final in-season race and prepare for IRA National Championship qualifier at the National Invitational Rowing Championships in May."

UP NEXT
Hobart will be back on the water May 4 when it heads to Mercer, New Jersey, to take on Columbia and Navy.
