Hobart Rowing Head Coach
Chris Kerber recently announced that
Cameron Kumagai '22 will join his staff as an assistant coach.
"Cameron brings the grit, skill, and leadership that every program wants — a proven competitor and devoted teammate who helped push Hobart crews to Liberty League and IRA-level success," Kerber said. "His experience representing the United States at both the national and world levels brings invaluable international race savvy and championship mindset to our squad."
Kumagai, who graduated from Hobart in 2022 with a bachelor's degree in Asian studies, was a four-year member of the Statesmen rowing team. He helped Hobart capture three Liberty League Championships. Kumagai was a member of Hobart's varsity eight that was named the Liberty League Crew of the Year in 2021 and 2022 after winning gold medals at the conference championship regatta with the varsity eight. He earned first team All-Liberty League honors as a senior. During his rookie season, he won a gold medal with 2V8 at the Liberty League Championships. Just over a week later, Kumagai and Hobart's 2V8 won a gold medal at the National Invitational Rowing Championships. He also competed at the IRA National Championships three times.
After graduation, Kumagai rowed with the Oklahoma City High Performance team, primarily focusing on the single and double sculls events. He competed at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing 12th. Kumagai has also rowed with Next Level Rowing in Hamilton, Ohio, where he competed at the 2022 World Rowing Costal Championships in Soundersfoot, Great Britain. Kumagai finished 12th overall in the mixed double sculls.
Kumagai returns to Hobart after spending the last 18 months as a coach at Great Miami Rowing Club in Hamilton, Ohio. He served as the GMRC assistant varsity coach from April 2024-July 2024 before being promoted to Varsity Head Coach. Kumagai's team finished first at the U19 Coastal Trials in the Men's Junior 2x, was third at the Youth Beach Spring Nationals 2x and won the youth national mixed inclusive 2x. He helped facilitate practices and create training blocks and workouts and oversaw the team at Midwest Regionals and Youth Nationals.
Kumagai has his Level 1 Coaching Certification.
