Crull 8th at Carl Van Duyne

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team competed in three regattas this past weekend, Oct. 3-4. First-year Nicholas Crull highlighted the weekend for HWS, finishing eighth at the Carl Van Duyne Trophy, the MAISA Singlehanded Conference Championship, hosted by Navy.
 
HWS also competed at the Danmark Trophy in New London, Connecticut. William Smith sailors were at the  Women's ACC Round 1A in Hanover, New Hampshire.
 
 
CARL VAN DUYNE TROPHY
  • Day one of the Carl Van Duyne saw racers compete in a 4-9 knot wind from the north-northeast, allowing for eight races to be contested.
  • Sunday sailors competed in a breeze ranging from 8-12 knots out of the northeast. Six additional races were contested.
  • Crull finished tied for eighth with Old Dominion's Pierce Brindley. Crull won the head-to-head tiebreaker. He was in the top five in five races, finishing the weekend with 112 points.
  • Senior Jack Carter was 14th. He had 180 points on the weekend. Carter crossed the line in the top 10 in three races.
  • Junior Dante Garcia and senior TJ Allison also represented the Statesmen, finishing 15th and 16th, respectively.
  • Navy's Cole Fanchi won the conference championship with 67 points.
 
WOMEN'S ACC ELIMINATIONS
  • In Hannover, New Hampshire, on Saturday, teams arrived to a shifty northwesterly breeze that ranged from 5-12 knots, allowing for eight races in each division to be sailed.
  • Sunday saw similar conditions, but a breeze out of the south. The final six races were contested.
  • The Herons finished ninth out of 18 teams, compiling 247 points on the weekend.
  • In A Division, junior Deana Fedulova sailed as skipper while senior Ella Donaldson (1-10) and senior Cara Brickhouse (11-14) sailed as crew. They finished in the top 10 seven times, with a first place finish in the 12th race. They finished with a score of 121.
  • In B Division, junior Sabrina Starck sailed as skipper while junior Olivia Wilkins sailed as crew. They finished in the top 10 nine times, with a fourth place finish in the 11th race. They finished with a score of 126.
  • Stanford won the regatta with 122 points.
 
DANMARK TROPHY
  • Sailors arrived to a northeasterly breeze on Saturday ranging from 5-12 knots. The breeze laid down throughout the day, with five races being completed.
  • Sunday was contested in a 5-10 knot breeze out of the northeast. An additional six races were contested on Day 2.
  • HWS finished 14th with 250 points.
  • Senior JJ Klempen sailed as skipper and senior Stella Kim sailed as crew in A Division. They crossed the line in the top 10 six times, including a second-place finish in the fifth race.
  • In B Division, junior James Kopack sailed in races 1-4 and 11 as skipper, and junior Kenelm Guinness sailed as skipper in races 5-10. Sophomore Jamie McGuffee sailed as crew with Kopack, and Molly Pile sailed as crew with Guinness.
  • Brown won the regatta with 139 points.
 
UP NEXT
HWS will be back on the water this weekend, Oct. 10-11, for three regattas. They will return to Annapolis for the Open Dinghy ACC Eliminations and to New London, Connecticut for the Stu Nelson Trophy. HWS will also head to Washington, D.C., for the Oyster Bowl.
