Middaugh, Carney net league praise

Herons begin homestand against RIT

10/5/2026 4:57:00 PM

Two members of the William Smith soccer team were honored by the Liberty League this afternoon. Junior midfielder Kristin Middaugh was tabbed the conference's Offensive Performer of the Week, while sophomore defender Sofia Carney was named the conference's Defensive Performer of the Week.

Middaugh and Carney guided the Herons to a 2-0-0 week in Liberty League play, defeating Ithaca 3-1 and Clarkson 1-0. With the two wins, William Smith improved to 7-3-0 for the season and a perfect 3-0-0 in conference play. The Herons concluded their six-game road trip with a 4-2-0 mark.

Middaugh scored both game-winning goals last week. On Wednesday against the Bombers, she scored in the 60th minute, collecting a failed clear attempt and firing a shot into the upper right corner of the cage. She followed that up, notching the Herons' lone goal against the Golden Knights on Saturday. Standing near the penalty spot, Middaugh one-timed a shot past the Clarkson goalie. Middaugh leads William Smith and is tied for fourth in the Liberty League with four goals.

Carney guided the Herons' defensive effort against Ithaca and Clarkson. William Smith's defense limited the Bombers and Golden Knights to a combined 17 shots, just six on target. Ithaca had all six shots on cage, and Clarkson had just four shots total in the contest. Carney and the defensive unit have pitched five shutouts this season.

The Herons will begin a stretch where they play five of their final six games on Cozzens Field tomorrow, Oct. 6, when they welcome RIT for a key Liberty League contest. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
