Sypeck, Colvin honored by Liberty League

Herons move up in polls ahead of Salisbury showdown

Three members of the William Smith lacrosse team were recognized by the Liberty League this afternoon. Junior defender Janey Sypeck was named the conference's defensive performer of the week, and first-year Cat Colvin was tabbed the rookie of the week. Junior midfielder Grace Rund earned a spot on the weekly honor roll for the third straight week.
 
In addition. William Smith (5-0) moved up to No. 8 in the IWLCA poll and to No. 5 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll. Last week, the Herons knocked off then No. 20 St. John Fisher 8-2 last Wednesday before defeating Skidmore 18-6 to open Liberty League play.
 
Sypeck anchored William Smith's defense that allowed just eight goals in a pair of victories last week. She had eight caused turnovers and seven ground balls against the Cardinals and Thoroughbreds. Sypeck had four caused turnovers and three ground balls against St. John Fisher as the Herons limited the Cardinals to just nine shots and two goals. In the Liberty League opener, she had four caused turnovers and four ground balls.  A starter in all five games this season, Sypeck leads the team with 14 ground balls, second in the Liberty League.
 
Colvin led William Smith's offense with six points on four goals and two assists. She also had seven ground balls and two caused turnovers on the week. The West Newbury, Massachusetts, native had two goals, including the game-winning tally, four ground balls and two caused turnovers against St. John Fisher. In her Liberty League debut, Colvin had a four-point game on two goals and two assists. She also had three ground balls. Colvin has started all five games this season, recording 13 points on seven goals and six assists. She has nine ground balls and two caused turnovers.
 
Rund scored four goals and had 18 draw controls out of the midfield. Against St. John Fisher, she scored one goal had two ground balls and won eight draws. Rund went on to win 10 draws and score three goals in the win over Skidmore. She leads the team with 11 goals and has a league-leading 41 draw controls. Rund is eighth in the nation in draw controls per game (8.20).
 
The Herons will be back in action tonight when they take on Salisbury (7-0) in Panama City Beach, Florida. The Sea Gulls are ranked fourth in the IWLCA poll and second in the USA Lacrosse Magazine poll. Opening draw is set for 9 p.m. (8 CST).
