PRINCETON, N.J.—The Hobart rowing team was back in action this weekend, April 4, with a race against Dartmouth and Georgetown in Princeton, on Carnegie Lake. Out of the three events Hobart was entered in, the Statesmen were second twice.
The rowers experienced a medium cross-head wind throughout the afternoon on the 2,000-meter course.
VARSITY EIGHT
- The Hobart first varsity eight was manned by Sam Hyman, Owen O'Connor, Charles Watroba, Colin Mester, Kire Richardson, Chase Sneddon, James Feeley IV, Carlo Capitanucci, and Tibor Teleki.
- The Statesmen jumped out to an early lead from the start over 18th-ranked Georgetown and fourth-ranked Dartmouth. At 350 meters into the race, the Statesmen made a move, reaching a length up on Georgetown. The Statesmen held this lead steady until the last 600 meters as they began to move away from the Hoyas once again.
- Hobart finished 5:55.7, four seconds in front of Georgetown.
SECOND VARSITY EIGHT
- The Statesmen's second varsity was composed of Ellie Dial, Jayden Dasher, Alan Marusic, James Faulkner, Alvaro Paulin, Nicholas Short, Henry McComb, Clement Newbold, and Sam Peeler.
- The Hobart 2V leaped off the start, taking them ahead of Georgetown and Dartmouth, and held their rate alongside the two crews until the last 1000 meters as Dartmouth and Georgetown retook the lead. Despite the steering mechanism issue, the men held their own throughout the race and brought home third place with a 6:22.5.
VARSITY FOUR
- Hobart's four consisted of Isabel Goldblatt-Hamilton, Estel Justus, Braden Hendrickson, Fletcher Grantham, and Liam O'Connor.
- The Statesmen's four faced Georgetown and two Dartmouth crews in the last race of the day. The four got off to a quick start, ahead of the three other crews. The Statesmen held even with the leading Dartmouth crew up until the 1000-meter mark, when the Big Green crew pulled away.
- The four finished their race with a time of 6:56.0, eight seconds behind Dartmouth's first-placing crew.
COACH'S CORNER
Hobart's Head Coach,
Chris Kerber, was ecstatic about the results, writing, "Big day for the Statesmen's first varsity eight on Carnegie today. Being 9 seconds off #4 Dartmouth and beating Georgetown in a cross-head wind says a lot about our winter training and our ability to prepare for top-level racing with a short runway. It tells us a lot about where this program is now and where it is headed." Coach Kerber adds that he is, "So proud of all our athletes today who got behind this performance!"
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action next Sunday, April 12, when it hosts the Occoquan Invitational in Virginia.
