Herons sweep weekly awards

The William Smith lacrosse team swept the Liberty League Weekly Awards as announced by the conference office this afternoon. Junior Kira Fulton was named the Offensive Performer of the Week, graduate student Casey Fiore earned Defensive Performer of the Week honors and first-year Cat Colvin was tabbed the Rookie of the Week.
 
The trio guided the Herons to their 10th Liberty League title on Sunday. William Smith improved to 17-2 on the season with a 15-6 win over Rochester in the semifinals and a 13-8 victory over Union in the championship game. With the victories, William Smith secured its 10th straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.
 
Fulton was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player following an 11-point performance against the Yellowjackets and Garnet Chargers. In Friday's semifinal, she notched five points on four goals and an assist. All four of her goals came in the first half as William Smith built a 12-1 lead after 30 minutes. In Sunday's championship, Fulton had three goals and three assists. A starter in all 19 games this season, Fulton has 48 points on 31 goals and 17 assists.
 
Fiore went 2-0 in goal for William Smith. She made 15 saves and finished the tournament with a 7.00 GAA and a .517 save percentage, seven ground balls and a caused turnover. Against Rochester, Fiore stopped eight shots and had three ground balls. Against Union, Fiore had eight saves and scooped up four ground balls. Fiore is 17-2 this season with a 6.86 GAA and a .473 save percentage.
 
Colvin made an immediate impact in her first Liberty League Tournament. An attacker, she had eight points on four goals and four assists. Against the Yellowjackets, Colvin had three points on a goal and two assists. She followed that up with three goals and two assists against the Garnet Chargers. Colvin has started all 19 games this season. She is second on the team with 50 points on 31 goals and 19 assists.
 
Ranked fifth in the IWLCA Poll for the second week in a row, the Herons will be back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 10, when they host the winner of the Williams-Grove City game.
