GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team posted its second shutout in as many games, notching its first win over Messiah College 2-0. Sophomore
Jackie Hall (Berkshire School/Newport, R.I.) scored both Heron goals.
"We played great team defense," Head Coach Sally Scatton said. "We worked hard in the preseason. We're very fit, and we handled the conditions well today."
Under a cloudless sky in 80-degree heat, the teams battled through a scoreless first half that was decidedly all green. William Smith took eight shots to Messiah's one in the first frame and turned up the intensity in the second half.
After posting the Herons' first two goals of the season on Wednesday, Hall was at it again today. Her first goal came nine minutes into the second half on a penalty corner, assisted by junior Lauren vonBereghy (University Lake School/Hartland, Wisc.). With 10 minutes remaining in the contest, she added an insurance goal, batting in a rebound off the goalie's pads.
While Hall and vonBereghy account for all five of William Smith's goals this season, Scatton focused on the entire team effort that went seven-deep on the bench.
"Everybody played very steady today," Scatton said. "I don't think it was a matter of anyone person today. Everyone played very steady, almost error-free hockey." For the game, the Herons outshot the Falcons 23-2.
Sophomore Marjorie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) earned the shutout without making a save, while Regina Landis made 16 stops for Messiah.
The win is the first by William Smith over Messiah in the program's history.
William Smith returns to action on Fri., Sept. 10, when the Herons travel to St. Lawrence University.
