Saints sneak past Herons in OT

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore Brooke Maloney (Greenwich/Greenwich, Conn.) scored in the 12th minute of overtime to lift visiting St. Lawrence over William Smith 3-2 in Liberty League field hockey action on McCooey Field today. The win ups the Saints record to 10-4, 5-1 in the conference, while the Herons slip to 8-7, 2-4.

Maloney's game-winner, her fifth goal of the season, came on a blast from the top of the circle, just to the right of the cage that glided inside the far post. St. Lawrence was outshot 14-13, but took all six of the shots in overtime.

The Saints opened the scoring in the 12th minute when junior Jennifer Stetson (Mt. Abraham/Bristol, Vt.) converted a penalty stroke for her sixth goal of the year.

In the 22nd minute, sophomore Sarah Gall (Red Hook/Germantown, N.Y.) evened the match with a reverse shot from the left side of the cage. The tie was short-lived however, as junior Joss-Elyse Smith (North Warren/Chestertown, N.Y.) batted home a rebound in the 26th minute to put SLU up 2-1 heading into halftime.

William Smith controlled the tempo in the second half, outshooting the visitors 10-2, but struggled to solve goalie Emilie Lannamann (Proctor Academy/Durham, N.H.). The senior finished the day with nine saves, including a lunging split as she ran across the goal mouth to foil a Heron scoring opportunity in the 45th minute.

Senior Jamie Tucciarone (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) broke through, tipping a shot by senior Charlotte Styer (Governor Mifflin/Mohnton, Pa.), for her eighth goal of the year.

Sophomore Chelsea Snyder (Cortland/Cortland, N.Y.) got the start in goal for the Herons, making two saves on four shots, while senior Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) turned back six of the seven shots she saw in relief.

William Smith will wrap up its conference schedule on Oct. 26, when the Herons host Hamilton (6-6, 3-3) at 1 p.m.
