Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—For the second day in a row, the William Smith field hockey team lost a conference match 3-2 in overtime. Hamilton sophomore Colleen Callaghan (Glens Falls/Queensbury, N.Y.) scored all three Continental goals to trip up the Herons.

Callaghan's game-winner came just 2 minutes, 35 seconds into the extra session. She broke free on a breakaway and launched her shot from the top of the circle as Heron senior goalie Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) came out to meet her. The ball crossed the goal line just inside the left post.

Callaghan put the visitors on the scoreboard first with another breakaway, this one in the ninth minute. Junior Sarah Palmer (Friends School/Baltimore, Md.) evened the match in the 28th minute, batting home a rebound.

After halftime, William Smith (8-8, 2-5) got off to a fast start. In the 38th minute, sophomore Emily Atwan (Pomfret School/Milton, Mass.) outran Hamilton junior goalie Courtney DeMaria (Groton School/Littleton, Mass.) to a loose ball at the top of the circle, scoring on a shot similar to Callaghan's game-winner.

The Herons nearly went up 3-1 just a short time later. Atwan's shot in the 41st minute, beat DeMaria, but senior Cassie Sullivan (St. Mark's School/Shrewsbury, Mass.) notched a defensive save to avoid the two-goal deficit.

It was a critical play because it kept the Continentals (7-6, 4-3) in striking distance. Callaghan's game-tying goal in the 67th minute was more of a cross than a shot, but it took a fortuitous bounce off a Heron stick to find the back of the cage.

DeMaria finished with eight saves, while DeKraker notched six.

Hamilton's win clinched the fourth seed in the Liberty League Tournament, Nov. 7-8, while William Smith will wrap up its season on Nov. 1, when the Herons host Geneseo at 2 p.m.
