CANTON, N.Y.—The Hobart tennis team was seeded fourth in the six-team Liberty League Tournament that began today at St. Lawrence. The Statesmen defeated No. 5 Union, 6-3, in the first round, before falling 9-0 to top-seeded Vassar in the semifinals. Hobart will square off with No. 3 St. Lawrence in the third place match at 9 a.m. on April 20.
The Statesmen swept the doubles matches against Union (1-10) to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Senior Charlie Davis, first-year Harry King, and junior Zach Schulz secured the win with singles victories at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5, respectively. Schulz’s match provided the most drama. He won the first set 6-4, but lost the second to Mike Kanner 6-2. Schulz bounced back in the third, winning 7-6 (7-3).
In the afternoon, Hobart (8-12) was overwhelmed by regionally ranked Vassar (14-4).
