Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 11th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team overwhelmed Ithaca College with a 6-1 decision on McCooey Field this afternoon. Senior
Jamie Tucciarone (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) and junior
Janelle Walkley (Tioga/Tioga Center, N.Y.) each scored twice for the Herons.
Tucciarone took the first three shots of the contest and found the third time to be a charm. Her second shot, from near the right post, deflected off junior goalie Chelsea Welsh's (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia, N.Y.) pads and rolled across the open goal mouth where Tucciarone tapped home her third goal of the year just 4:28 into the contest. William Smith took a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute when Walkley redirected a blast from the top of the circle by junior
Sarah Palmer (Friends School/Baltimore, Md.). Welsh posted 12 saves in the match.
The Bombers halved their deficit on a penalty corner in the 22nd minute. From the top of the circle, junior Krista Fieselmann (Bridgewater/Bridgewater, N.J.) drove the insertion from senior Elyse Green (Shawnee/Medford, N.J.) past senior goalie
Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.). DeKraker finished with five saves.
The Herons got the goal back in the 31st minute when Walkley deflected a long strike down the middle of the field by senior
Charlotte Styer (Governor Mifflin/Mohnton, Pa.), giving William Smith a 3-1 lead heading into halftime.
In the 39th minute, Tucciarone took over the team's scoring lead, finishing a scramble in front, for a 4-1 lead. Walkley narrowly missed a hat trick in the 46th minute, when her drag shot on a penalty corner hit the crossbar.
In the 61st minute, Furlong gave the Herons a 5-1 advantage finishing a penalty corner assisted by Styer and senior
Katie Mancuso (Harpursville/Port Crane, N.Y.). Junior
Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) closed out the day's scoring, finishing another scramble in front of the Ithaca cage. The tally is her fourth of the year, matching Tucciarone's total.
William Smith is back in action on Sept. 20, when the Herons host Oberlin at 11 a.m. in the opening match of the annual William Smith Invitational.
