#11 Herons down Oberlin

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 11th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team defeated Oberlin 6-1 this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Herons improve to 5-0, while the Yeowomen fall to 1-7 overall.

Junior forward Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Brittany Furlong (Cazenovia/Cazenovia, N.Y.) led the William Smith offense with two goals apiece, while senior defender Charlotte Styer (Governor Mifflin/Mohnton, Pa.) added two assists.

The Herons jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 1 minute, 26 seconds into the game. Hamilton snuck the unassisted goal past Oberlin sophomore goalkeeper Manya Lulek (Holliston/Holliston, Mass.) for her fifth tally of the season.

William Smith increased its lead to 2-0 in the 11th minute of action, as Styer found senior forward Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.) for the score. The goal marked Landahl's first of the year.

In the second half, William Smith notched three more goals in less than a five minute span. The scoring barrage began with Hamilton's second goal of the day at 48:14, followed by two from Furlong at 49:26 and 52:37. Junior midfielder Sarah Palmer (Friends School/Baltimore, Md.) assisted Furlong's first tally, while Styer and first-year Kiersten Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) set up Furlong's second score on a penalty corner.

The Yeowomen got on the board in the 56th minute, thanks to senior Abigail Brox (St. George's School/Manchester, Mass.) knocking in a pass from first-year Sarah Yeager (Cushing Academy/Lebanon, N.H.).

Sophomore Herons Tempe Newson (Lenape Valley/Stanhope, N.J.) and Natalie Blauvelt (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) were responsible for William Smith's final goal of the day at 59:57.

Lulek finished with 24 saves for Oberlin. The Herons outshot their visitors 52-3.

William Smith will be in action again tomorrow, Sept. 21, when they take on Stevenson in the final game of the William Smith Invitational at 1 p.m.
