GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team downed St. John Fisher 9-0 this afternoon in Bristol Field House. The Herons are now 1-0 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 2-3 overall.
Senior
Chelsea Rauck (Columbus School for Girls/Bexley, Ohio) led William Smith at first singles, earning the win over Cardinal Laura Hale 6-2, 6-0. Rauck also teamed up with first-year
Joanie Hilton (Shady Side Academy/Pittsburgh, Pa.) for the win at No. 1 singles. They defeated Hale and Katie Barlow, 8-3. Hilton posted a victory at No. 4 singles as well, over Katie Neubeck (6-0, 6-2).
Sophomores
Amanda Slack (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and
Melissa Slack (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) combined to defeat St. John Fisher's Neubeck and Lauren Jones 8-3 at second doubles. They both topped their singles opponents as well, in the second and sixth spots, respectively.
Rounding out the victorious Heron line up was junior
Shari Damon (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) with the win over Jones at No. 3 singles, and first-year
Casey Kennedy (Lake Forest Academy/Kenilworth, Ill.) with the win against Katie Catalano at No. 5. Kennedy and classmate
Jess McCue (Oneonta/Oneonta, N.Y.) also earned the 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
William Smith will be back in action Sept. 26-28 when it hosts the ITA Championships.
