Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 12th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team rolled to a 7-1 victory over Elmira College tonight. The Herons completely dominated the contest, outshooting the Soaring Eagles 39-2 and holding an 8-0 advantage on penalty corners.
First-year
Kiersten Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) led the charge with two goals and an assist in her collegiate debut, while her older sister, junior
Kaitlyn Hamilton, set up a pair of tallies and scored one of her own.
William Smith (1-0) needed less than two minutes to score its first goal.
Kaitlyn Hamilton sent a short pass to junior
Sarah Palmer (Friends School/Baltimore, Md.) right in front of the cage. Palmer simply poked the offering between the keepers' pads for a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, senior
Jamie Tucciarone (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) pounded two shots on goal that both got turned back by junior goalie Jalene McCulloch (Millbrook/Belleville, Ontario), but the third time proved to be the charm as the Herons doubled their lead.
McCulloch made 21 saves on 26 shots before yielding to Hillary Duman (2 GA, 0 Svs) for the final 13:32.
William Smith carried a 3-0 lead into halftime thanks to the Hamilton sisters. Racing against the clock, Kiersten dribbled in on a two-on-one with McCulloch. From the top of the circle, she sent a pass to Kaitlyn on the right post. Kaitlyn's shot crossed the goal line just before the first half expired.
The Herons got second half goals from Kiersten (2), sophomore
Sarah Gall (Germantown/Red Hook, N.Y.), and sophomore
Emily Atwan (Pomfret School/Milton, Mass.) to build an insurmountable 7-0 advantage.
Elmira (0-1) broke up the shutout with just 2 minutes, 35 second remaining when sophomore Sharon Johnson (S. Portland/S. Portland, Maine) drove home a rebound.
William Smith senior goalie
Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) did not face a shot in the first 64:09. Sophomore
Chelsea Snyder (Cortland/Cortland, N.Y.) made one save in relief.
The Herons are back in action on Sept. 6, when they travel to Nazareth for a 2 p.m. match.
