Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team put a scare into sixth-ranked Cortland State this afternoon, but the Red Dragons rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to escape with a 2-1 win on McCooey Field. First-year Sara Woodward scored the game-winner with just 79 seconds remaining in the match.
The Herons (8-5) controlled the tempo of the first half, outshooting their guests 11-5. Sophomore
Kiersten Hamilton gave William Smith the lead in the 28th minute, batting home a rebound off the pads of junior goalie Ashley Hughes. The goal was her seventh of the season.
Cortland (12-0) nearly evened the match in the 42nd minute. A diagonal pass from left to right found its way to first-year Liz DeWaters with Heron first-year goalie
Taryn Little positioned closer to the left post. DeWaters got a shot off, but senior
Sarah Palmer reached back to stop the shot just inches off the goal line.
Nine minutes later, Waters got her goal, when she redirected a shot by first-year Sam George from outside the circle. The tip slipped inside the right post for Waters' second goal of the season.
Waters also figured in the game-winner, dribbling in along the goal line and send a pass from near the right post to Woodward in the center of the field, who pushed across her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Both goalies enjoyed strong afternoons with Hughes recording 15 saves to Little's nine.
William Smith is back in action at 2 p.m. on Oct. 17, when the Herons host seventh-ranked Lebanon Valley.
