Statesmen hand Cragg 100th career victory 33-10 over SLU

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart football team reached the end zone on its first three possessions on its way to a 33-10 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence on Boswell Field this afternoon. The win is the 100th of Head Coach Mike Cragg's 15-year career.

The Statesmen (2-2, 1-1) posted season-highs for rushes (43), rushing touchdowns (4), total offense (373), points and sacks (6) in their 18th consecutive win over the Saints (2-3, 1-1).

Sophomore quarterback Doug Vella directed a balanced attack, completing 13-of-23 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 17 yards and another score. Vella completed passes to eight different players, including three for 38 yards to senior wideout Tyler Vincent and three for 31 yards and a touchdown to sophomore wideout Garth Muratori. Junior running back Andrew Marlier led eight Statesmen ball carriers with a game-high 50 yards and two TDs on 14 carries.

Meanwhile, the Hobart defense was a disruptive force in the St. Lawrence backfield. The Statesmen logged eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including six sacks of starting quarterback J.P. Kearney. Junior defensive end Chris Luber led the charge, counting 2.5 sacks among his five tackles. Junior defensive end James Rayhill and junior linebacker Kyle O'Laughlin posted a team-high six tackles each.

Hobart took the game's opening drive 61 yards in eight plays, capped off by a 7-yard Marlier TD. Sophomore tight end Matt Marsh made the drive's big play, pulling in a 32-yard heave from Vella. The extra point was no good, giving the Statesmen a 6-0 lead.

The defense forced St. Lawrence to go three-and-out and sophomore cornerback Drake Woodard blocked and recovered the Saints' punt to give Hobart the ball at the SLU 3. Marlier took the next play into the end zone. The extra point put the Statesmen in front 13-0 with 9:07 remaining in the first quarter.

St. Lawrence answered with its only scoring drive of the first half, getting a 45-yard field goal from first-year Chris Dris. Luber and senior tackle Anthony Shaw put the breaks on the drive with a sack of Kearney on third and 10 from the Hobart 24.

Hobart countered with the only points of the second quarter on sophomore running back Kyle Tritten's 1-yard plunge. The extra point put the Statesmen in front 20-3, an advantage they carried into the locker room at the break.

Hobart's next scoring drive needed just five plays to cover 60 yards and ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Vella to Muratori. The Statesmen took a 27-3 lead on the extra point with 7:27 left in the third quarter.

Senior linebacker Orlando Patterson set up Hobart's fourth quarter touchdown, sacking Kearney and forcing a fumble that O'Laughlin recovered at the Saints' 16. Three plays later, Vella scored on an 8-yard draw up the middle to put Hobart up 33-3.

St. Lawrence got its only touchdown of the day with 6:41 remaining on a 30-yard pass from sophomore Andy Spadoni to sophomore fullback Marcus Washington.

The Saints got a game-high 10 tackles from sophomore end Doug Geraghty.

St. Lawrence began the weekend as the toughest team in the league to convert on third down against (29.7%), but Hobart gained first down yardage on nine of its 16 third downs. The Saints were also second in the conference in sacks, but the Statesmen offensive line did not allow any of their four signal callers to be taken down.

Hobart is back in action on Oct. 10, when the Statesmen visit Union for another Liberty League contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
