Latasha Coney recorded her first career triple double, but Skidmore spoiled the celebration with a pair of late free throws to steal a 69-67 Liberty League women's basketball victory. The Lyons native logged 14 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds in the Herons first triple double in at least a decade.
Junior forward
Erin Cunningham, who scored a team-high 18 points, was whistled for a foul with 0.2 seconds remaining. Kellye Caufield made both free throws to cap a 13-point, eight-rebound performance and secure the victory. Sharlyn Harper scored a game-high 19 points off the bench for Skidmore.
Just 13 seconds earlier, William Smith had tied the game for the 12th time when first-year forward
Kristen Kush finished a lay up. She produced her first career double-double with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
William Smith trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, and trailed 34-27 at halftime.
Senior guard
Paige Myers (6 pts, 6 rebs) drained a three to start the second half scoring, launching the Herons on a 14-3 run. The surge put William Smith up by four, 41-37, setting up a back-and-fourth finish that ultimately ended in heartbreak.
The Herons shot 41.2 percent from the floor, compared to 38.6 for the Thoroughbreds and dominated the glass, outrebounding their hosts 51-36. However, William Smith did itself no favors at the free throw line, connecting on just 6-of-16. Skidmore was 18-of-26 from the line.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the loss ended William Smith's season. The Herons end the campaign with a 13-12 overall record, 7-7 and tied for fifth in the conference. The top four teams make the Liberty League Tournament.
