#18 Herons down Cardinals 9-7

Box Score The 18th-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team defeated St. John Fisher 9-7 this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Herons remain unbeaten on the season with a 3-0 mark, while the Cardinals slip to 0-3 overall.

Junior Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) led William Smith with three goals, while senior Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.), and first-years Lucy Johnson (Millburn/Short Hills, N.J.) and Rosie Scheibel (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) each tallied twice.

Jen Springett, Lauren Glavin, and Meg Merriam all netted two goals for St. John Fisher, while Ashley Fenyn tallied a goal and an assist.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after back-to-back free position goals from Fenyn and Glavin in the first four minutes of the contest. With 19 minutes, 14 seconds to play in the first half, Parnell finally got the Herons on the board, cutting the visitors' lead to one.

Glavin's second tally of the day put St. John Fisher up 3-1 with 14:52 on the clock. William Smith took over from there, scoring the next six goals, including four to end the half. The Herons held a 5-3 advantage at the break, and increased their lead to 7-3 less than three minutes into the second session.
Merriam halted William Smith's scoring run at the 26:06 mark, off an assist from Mary Stimson, cutting the Cardinals' deficit to 7-4. The teams traded tallies for the next several minutes, but St. John Fisher would not get closer than three goals.

With 2:16 remaining, Merriam scored again to bring the Cardinals within two, 9-7, but they would run out of time.

Senior Heron goalie Rebecca Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca, N.Y.) collected a season-high 13 saves, including a key stop on a shot from Glavin with 56 seconds to play in the game that would have brought the visitors within one. Vicki Sahm recorded 14 saves for St. John Fisher.

William Smith held a slight 32-31 advantage in total shots.

The Herons will be back in action on March 27, when they host Rensselaer for their first Liberty League contest of the season at 4 p.m.
