The William Smith College lacrosse team climbed two spots to No. 16 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association ranking. The Herons moved up after winning all three of their contests last week. William Smith boasts an undefeated 5-0 overall mark, and enters today's contest at 17th-ranked Cortland as one of four remaining ranked teams unbeaten in Division III.
Last week, the Herons defeated St. John Fisher 9-7, Rensselaer 17-10, and Vassar 19-10, thanks to 14 goals from junior
Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.). First-year
Lucy Johnson (Millburn/Short Hills, N.J.) (7 goals-3 assists) and senior
Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) (7-2) also registered solid offensive performances. Fitzgerald and Johnson were tabbed the Liberty League's Co-Offensive Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for their efforts.
Fitzgerald ranks 10th in the nation and leads the Liberty League in goals per game (4.80), and also paces the conference in points per game (5.40). Defensively, senior
Torie Allen (The Governor's Academy/Dedham, Mass.) ranks 26th in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.6), and is 29¬th in ground balls per game (4.2).
The Red Dragons (3-4) opened their season with a tough schedule, playing Division I Davidson (13-10), second-ranked The College of New Jersey (16-10), and sixth-ranked Hamilton (12-11), falling to all three. Last weekend, Cortland lost a close game at Ithaca, 13-12, before rebounding with a 17-6 win over Geneseo yesterday. The Red Dragons are led by Danielle Torre (25-8) and Lindsay Abbott (22-6).
