Lucy Johnson (Millburn/Short Hills, N.J.) netted five goals to guide the 16th-ranked Heron lacrosse team past Rochester 17-8 this afternoon on McCooey Field. William Smith improves to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the Liberty League, while the Yellowjackets fall to 5-8 on the season and 1-5 in the conference.
Johnson finished with six points, adding an assist to her five-goal performance. Sophomore
Cassie Findlay (Episcopal/Riverside, Conn.) added three goals and a helper for the Herons, while first-years
Callie Frelinghuysen (Darien/Darien, Conn.) and
Rosie Scheibel (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) each tallied three goals.
Sophomore Lauren Latona (Williamsville East/East Amherst, N.Y.) paced the Yellowjackets with two goals and an assist, while senior Mary Kate Hannan (Christian Brothers Academy/Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Charlotte Clements (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) both scored twice.
The Herons held a 5-2 lead with 9 minutes, 13 seconds to play in the first half, thanks to goals from junior
Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.), Findlay, junior
Sarah Goodkind (Millbrook School/Greenwich, Conn.), and two from Johnson. Rochester countered with consecutive tallies from Hannan and Latona to cut William Smith's lead to one, 5-4, with 2:29 to play.
Thanks to back-to-back free position goals from Johnson and Scheibel, and another unassisted tally from Scheibel with 46 seconds on the clock, the Herons were took an 8-4 advantage into halftime.
William Smith outscored the Yellowjackets 9-4 in the second half. The Herons netted the first three goals of the stanza, with a Scheibel tally and back-to-back scores from Findlay. Goals from Rochester junior Amanda Case (Langley/McLean, Va.) and Clements brought the Yellowjackets with in five, 11-6, with 18:51 remaining, but they would not get closer.
Senior
Becky Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca, N.Y.) recorded 11 saves and five ground balls for William Smith in her ninth win of the year, while senior Leslie Dube (Marcellus/Skaneateles, N.Y.) collected 13 saves for Rochester.
The Herons will be back in action on April 21, when they host Ithaca in their final regular season home game at 5 p.m.
