The William Smith College lacrosse team moved up in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) ranking to No. 13. In their final week of the regular season, the Herons defeated Ithaca 19-10 and Skidmore 15-5, before falling to sixth-ranked Union 11-5.
Senior goalkeeper
Becky Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca, N.Y.) has anchored the defense. She leads the Liberty League and ranks eighth in the nation with a .541 save percentage, and ranks third in the conference and 19th in the country in goals against average (8.72). In front of Josefiak is senior defender
Torie Allen (Governor's Academy/Dedham, Mass.), who ranks second in the Liberty League in ground balls (3.71) and draw controls (3.43) per game.
Offensively, William Smith is led by junior attacker
Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) and first-year midfielder
Lucy Johnson (Millburn/Short Hills, N.J.). Both have totaled 50 points on the year. Fitzgerald's team-high 40 goals rank her sixth in the conference in goals per game (2.86), while Johnson's 37 tallies rank ninth (2.64/g). Johnson also leads the team with 13 assists.
The Herons (11-3) will be in action again on Fri., May 1, when they travel to Union to take on eighth-ranked Hamilton (12-2) in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament. The game is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. Fans unable to make it to Schenectady can listen live on
