Box Score [Editor's note: Due to an error in the pressbox, Newson was originally credited with four goals and an assist. Video replay showed Kaitlyn Hamilton scored both second half goals.]

GENEVA, N.Y.—
Junior Tempe Newson stole the show in her first collegiate start, recording a game-high seven points, as the Herons cruised to a 6-0 victory over Elmira under the lights of McCooey Field. She boasted a hat trick before halftime and added an assist in the second half.

In the fourth minute, Newson opened the scoring, batting home a cross-crease pass from Hamilton. Nine minutes later, junior Emily Atwan set up Newson with a similar crossing pass.

William Smith seized a 3-0 lead in the 20th minute when sophomore Kiersten Hamilton batted home a rebound. Newson sent the Herons into the break with a 4-0 lead thanks to another cross-crease pass, this one from Kiersten Hamilton in the 23rd minute.

William Smith (1-0) outshot Elmira (0-1) 28-0 in the first half and 45-0 for the match. The Herons also had an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.

After the intermission, Kiersten Hamilton set up Kaitlyn Hamilton's 44th-minute goal. Kaitlyn Hamilton put the final nail in the coffin in the 56th minute off a Newson assist.

William Smith's offensive fireworks overshadowed a fine performance by Elmira senior goalie Jalene McCulloch. In 60 minutes of work, she logged an amazing 26 saves, surpassing the 21 stops she posted against the Herons last season. Senior Allison Holsinger stopped the only shot she faced in 10 minutes of relief work.

William Smith is back in action at 2 p.m. on Sept. 5 when the Herons host Nazareth.
