Emily Atwan produced two goals and an assist and first-year
Annie Kietzman added a pair of goals to lead the 18th-ranked William Smith field hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Ithaca. With the win, the Herons improve to 5-0, while the Bombers slip to 2-2.
In the 10th minute, Kietzman opened the scoring with a strong shot from the left slot. The lead lasted less than three minutes, as senior Ally Girasole finished a scramble in front of the William Smith cage exactly 12 minutes into the match.
In the 15th minute, senior
Kaitlyn Hamilton gave the Herons the lead for good, depositing her team-leading seventh goal of the season off an assist from Atwan. Just over three minutes later, Atwan joined the scoring efforts, running onto a lead out pass from senior
Janelle Walkley for a one-on-one with Ithaca senior goalie Courtney Dowell.
The defenses tightened up, keeping both offenses off the board for the remainder of the first half and nearly 11 minutes into the second half. Kietzman broke up the scoring lull in the 56th minute with a mirror effort of her first goal, burying a shot from the right slot.
Ithaca got within 4-2 in the 63rd minute. First-year Tracy Rivas tipped a cross to classmate Abbey Lind, who batted the bouncing ball home for her second goal of the year.
In the 67th minute, senior
Juliet Leeming put to rest any thoughts of a comeback, scoring off her own rebound for her first collegiate tally. Atwan completed the box score, with an unassisted goal that just beat the final horn.
First-year
Taryn Little got the win in her first collegiate start, making one save. Senior
Sarah Palmer helped out the rookie with a defensive save in the 54th minute. Dowell turned in a strong effort in the cage, making 23 stops. She also benefited from sophomore JulieAnne Butare's second half defensive save.
William Smith outshot Ithaca 34-7 and held a slim 7-6 edge in penalty corners.
The Herons are back in action at 1 p.m. on Sept. 20, when they host Wheaton (Mass.).
