Herons hold steady at No. 5

The William Smith College soccer team remains the fifth-ranked team in Division III, according to this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. The Herons continue to be the top team in the NSCAA's East Region ranking as well, after defeating Rochester 1-0 in a thrilling double-overtime victory on Sept. 17.

First-year Renee Jensen scored the game-winning goal in the 108th minute of action vs. the Yellowjackets to give William Smith the win. Jensen netted her third goal of the season after a shot by sophomore Chelsea England rebounded back to her, and collected Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Week honors for her efforts. This is the second straight week she has won the award.

Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Davis turned back four Rochester shots to pick up her third shutout of the season. Her 0.64 goals against average ranks third in the Liberty League. Davis also shares second in the conference in shutouts, and is tied for third in saves (21) and saves per game (3.50).

The Herons (4-2-0) are also ranked 10th in the latest D3Soccer.com poll. They will be back in action on Sept. 25, when they open Liberty League play at Vassar (3-3-0) at 4 p.m.
