4 Herons reach state semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y.—
The William Smith tennis team had five players reach the semifinals of their respective draws at the New York State Championships. The Herons reached the penultimate matches in the No. 3 through No. 6 singles brackets.

In third singles, sophomore Kiara Ocasio defeated Hartwick's Kimberly Post 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before dropping a hard-fought 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 11-9 decision to Vassar's Lindsay Kantor in the semifinals.

In fourth singles, junior Joanie Hilton won 6-2, 6-3 against the Brewers' Caroline Dunn-Rankin in the quarterfinals, but fell 6-1, 6-1 to Tory Engros of Skidmore in the semifinals.

Like Ocasio, sophomore Hallsey Leighton won in straight sets in the fifth singles quarterfinals, but fell in three in the semifinals. She knocked off St. Lawrence's Sara Willett 6-4, 6-2, before bowing 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 11-9 to Ariel Sultan of NYU.

In sixth singles, sophomore Remy Raevsky cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 quarterfinal win over Rensselaer's Jeanette Carillo, but lost to the Thoroughbreds' Robyn Baird 6-1, 6-2 in the semis.

In second singles, junior Casey Kennedy lost in the quarterfinal round 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) to Skidmore's Melissa Hirsch.

After earning first round wins in second and third doubles on Friday, both Heron tandems were defeated in the quarterfinals today.

The New York State Championships are the final event of the fall tennis season.
