CORTLAND, N.Y.—Ninth-ranked Cortland State converted a penalty stroke five minutes, 57 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Red Dragon field hockey team to a 1-0 win over 19th-ranked William Smith this afternoon in a non-conference match.
Sophomore goalie
Taryn Little turned aside five shots for the Herons (10-5), senior goalie Ashley Hughes made one save for Cortland, and senior Brittany Wilson prevented a William Smith goal with a defensive save.
Much of the action throughout the game was played in the midfield with few scoring chances. The Herons had the best opportunity in the opening half with less than four and a half minutes remaining, but Wilson denied senior
Emily Atwan's long blast at the goal line after the shot got past Hughes.
In the second half, Cortland (13-1) controlled play and had the best look with just under 19 minutes left in regulation. Sophomore Danielle Groneman received a pass 5 yards from the goal, spun around and sent a shot just wide. Neither team threatened in the first 15-minute extra session, sending the game into a second overtime.
The Red Dragons generated pressure in the opening minutes, and with Cortland deep in the arc, Little covered up the ball to create a penalty-stroke opportunity. Senior Brianna Yetsko took the stroke and lifted a shot into the upper left for the game winner.
Overtime has not been kind to the Herons of late. Dating back to the 2007 season, William Smith has lost six in a row when more than 70 minutes is required to determine a winner. The Herons last overtime win was a 2-1 triumph over Skidmore on Nov. 3, 2007.
William Smith will close out its Liberty League slate this weekend with trips to Rensselaer and Vassar. The Herons will face the Engineers on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m., and the Brewers on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m.
