Throughout October, William Smith student-athletes and coaches will continue to support the fight against breast cancer and honor National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). The Herons will facilitate events and fundraisers for Embrace Your Sisters, a local charity that offers short-term breast cancer-related financial assistance to area residents.
The William Smith Athletics Department has been an active supporter of the fight against breast cancer, raising more than $60,000 for breast cancer research and patient support over the past 12 years.
Every Friday in the month of October, the coaching staff will have the option to participate in Denim Day. Established in 1996, the movement operates under the slogan “one day, one cause, one cure.” In exchange for a donation to Embrace Your Sisters, members of the William Smith Athletics staff may wear jeans to work on Fridays. The Hobart Athletics Department has also signed on in support.
The Heron rowing team will sport the signature pink ribbon logo on its unisuits during races in October. The squad also plans to sell pink t-shirts during its regattas. The proceeds will be donated to Embrace Your Sisters.
Starting on Saturday, Oct. 16, the swimming and diving team will don pink caps while in the pool.
During the Nazareth Invitational Oct. 17 and 18, the WS golf team will lace up pink shoelaces and wear pink undershirts. Golfers will also use pink tees and tie pink ribbons on their golf bags.
The Heron field hockey squad will show its support with pink ribbons and shoelaces.
Featuring the color pink in their pregame attire, the soccer team wears pink warm-up shirts and the cross country team pins pink ribbons on their warm-up suits.
Through fall practices and into the spring, the lacrosse team will wears pink gloves. Last year, the squad made a donation to Embrace Your Sisters through Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic.
For women's regattas during the month of October, the sailing team will suit up in pink pinnies.
The basketball team plans to wear pink ribbons on practice uniforms until the month of October comes to a close.
The William Smith Athletics Department is selling tickets for a benefit titled “Chefs, Wine and Art.” Sponsored by the Canandaigua Wegmans Community Connections Team, the fundraiser will feature a selection of wine and food, in addition to a silent action. The event is scheduled for Oct. 17 from 2-5 p.m. at the New York Wine and Culinary Center; its proceeds will benefit Embrace Your Sisters. Tickets cost $25 per person. For more information contact
