William Smith squash tops St. Lawrence 5-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The William Smith College squash team edged St. Lawrence 5-4 today in the consolation semifinal round of the Walker Cup, the “C” division of the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships. The Herons avenged a 6-3 loss to the Saints earlier in the season, improving to 9-9 overall.

Senior Medora Hartz led William Smith with a 3-1 (11-9, 4-11, 11-9, 11-5) win over Jenn Hearn at No. 2. She was the lone Heron to earn a victory in the top half of the lineup.

William Smith swept match Nos. 6-9. Senior Emily Hazenberg gained early momentum at No. 6 with a 12-10 victory in the first game against Jessie Ziegler. She went on to win 3-1 (12-10, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4). First-years Courtney Leous, Anne Habecker, and Lucia Rowe rounded out the lineup at Nos. 7, 8, and 9, respectively. Leous defeated Molly Caplan 3-1 (11-8, 9-11, 14-12, 11-8), Habecker topped Alyssa Smith 3-1 (11-8, 13-11, 2-11, 11-6), and Rowe downed Katherine Demakos 3-0 (16-14, 11-8, 11-7).

The Herons will take on Bowdoin tomorrow, Feb. 28, in the consolation final at 9 a.m.
