Two members of the William Smith College lacrosse team were honored by the ECAC today. Senior attacker
Molly Fitzgerald was tabbed the ECAC Upstate Offensive Player of the Week, while senior midfielder
Brittany Callaghan was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Fitzgerald totaled 11 goals and five assists in a 2-0 week for the Herons. She notched five goals and two helpers in a 22-21 win at St. John Fisher on Tuesday, and added a game-high six goals and three assists in a 21-13 victory over Geneseo on Saturday. Fitzgerald also picked up seven ground balls, won four draw controls, and caused three turnovers on the week.
Fitzgerald also earned Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week honors for her efforts. She ranks 24th in the nation in assists per game (2.20), and currently leads the conference in assists (11), ranks second in points (26), and fourth in goals (15).
Callaghan was dubbed the Liberty League's Co-Defensive Performer of the week as well, after posting five points, eight ground balls, six draw controls, and three caused turnovers. She tallied two goals, three ground balls, five draw controls, and a caused turnover vs. the Cardinals. Against the Knights, Callaghan collected a game-high five ground balls to go with a goal, two helpers, and two caused turnovers.
The Herons hold a 3-2 overall record, and will open their Liberty League schedule on April 2 at Vassar. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast locally on WHWS-FM (105.7).
