Statesmen finish 4th in Flower City Invitational

Nazareth Results | Oneonta Results | Rochester Results

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—
The Hobart tennis team went 1-2 in the Flower City Invitational over the weekend, finishing fourth in the standings. The Statesmen won their opening match 5-0 over Nazareth, but dropped 5-2 decisions to Oneonta and Rochester.

On Saturday morning against the Golden Flyers, Hobart swept the doubles matches to build a 3-0 lead. In singles play, senior Matt Chin won 6-1, 6-2 over Erik Manske at fifth singles and junior Walter Green topped Nick Lord 6-1, 6-1 to secure the match.

After falling to the Red Dragons in the semifinals, the Statesmen looked to rebound against the Yellowjackets. Sophomore Bruce Grant and junior Alex James got the team off to a good start, winning first doubles 8-6 over Daniel Barbash and Yoni Zuckerman. Unfortunately for Hobart, Rochester rebounded to take the second and third doubles points.

In singles play, James again scored a victory for the Statesmen, defeating Matt Volkov 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. The Yellowjackets, however, won the top three singles matches to clinch the victory.

Hobart will be back in action Oct. 1-3, in the annual USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship.
