GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith tennis team won two of the five championships in its own Mary Hosking Invitational. First-year Kate O'Connor captured the C Flight Singles title, while sophomores
Hallsey Leighton and
Remy Raevsky teamed up to win the B Flight Doubles Championship.
All matches used eight-game pro set scoring. O'Connor outlasted her first round opponent, St. Lawrence's Justine Rusk, 9-7. That proved to be her stiffest competition of the weekend. O'Connor breezed through her quarterfinal match, topping Ithaca's Katrina Erdahl 8-0. In the semifinals, she drew classmate
Casey Nicoletti. O'Connor prevailed 8-6. In the final, she dispatched the Saints' Whitney Hubbell 8-2.
Leighton and Raevsky sailed through the B Flight to their title. Their toughest challenge also came in the first round, where they beat Nazareth's Sherrita Wilkins and Cara Yinger 8-4. Following 8-3 victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Leighton and Raevsky blanked Hubbell and Amanda Ryan 8-0 in the championship.
In the A Flight Singles Championship, Frances Tseng of Rochester defeated teammate Lia Weiner 8-1. Junior
Joanie Hilton was the top Heron performer in the flight, advancing to the semifinals with a pair of victories before falling to Weiner 8-2.
In the B Flight Singles Championship, Rochester's Jamie Bow triumphed over William Smith sophomore
Kiara Ocasio 8-3. Ocasio lost just eight games total in her three matches prior to the finale.
In the A Flight Doubles Championship, Tseng and Alexandra Goodman toppled St. Lawrence's Hillary Drewry and Stephanie Finn 8-5.
The Herons will be back in action Sept. 25-27, when they host the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships.
