Valiants top Saints 4-3

In the third game of the William Smith Classic at McCooey Field, Manhattanville built a three-goal lead and held off a late charge by St. Lawrence to post a 4-3 victory. Valiant goalie Melissa Grant made 12 saves, including 10 in the second half, to earn the win.

Manhattanville (2-4) opened the scoring in the 20th minute. On a penalty corner, Colleen Macedo found the back of the net on a drive from the top of the circle. Jen Ascencio and Kayla Meenan assisted on Macedo's first goal of the season.

The Valiants doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when Alyssa Tourdot finished a scramble in front of the Saints' goal, assisted by Melissa Goncalves.

Nineteen seconds later, St. Lawrence (2-3) finally broke through. Taylor Vogt sent the ball into the circle from the left wing that Erika Swits poked home for her third goal of the year.

Manhattanville led 2-1 at the break.

In the 52nd minute, Megan Greene drove home a rebound to raise the Valiant lead to 3-1. Three minutes later, Kayla Meenan scored an unassisted tally when her shot hit the SLU keeper and trickled across the goal line.

In the 57th minute, Swits, assisted by Brooke Maloney, got her second goal of the game to trim the Saints' deficit to 4-2. In the 64th minute, Vogt collected a rebound and slotted it just inside the right post to make it a one-goal game. St. Lawrence took the final two shots of the contest, but Grant saved one and the other was blocked by one of her defenders.

After getting outshot 8-4 in the first half, the Saints posted a 17-5 advantage in the second half. Manhattanville had a 10-5 lead in penalty corners.

St. Lawrence goalie Nicole Matons made six saves in the contest.
