#11 Bears rally past #17 Herons

Box Score

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 17th-ranked William Smith field hockey team jumped out to an early lead, but No. 11 Ursinus rallied with a pair of second half goals to escape with a 2-1 non-conference victory today. The loss halts the Herons' win streak at five, while the Bears run their streak to four.

William Smith (11-3) opened the scoring late in the first half when sophomore Taylor Cappello redirected a blast by classmate Melanie O'Connor into the top of the cage. Her team leading 10th goal of the season came just 5:02 before halftime.

In the 52nd minute, Ursinus (10-2) earned a penalty corner. First-year goalie Catherine Hare, making her first collegiate start, kicked away the Bears' ensuing shot on goal, but junior Rachel Pandl was there to collect the rebound and fired it home to even the match.

Nine minutes later, senior Nicole Hanby sent a crossing pass to classmate Alyssa Thren on the left post, who slapped home the game-winner with 9:19 remaining in the match.

The Herons turned up the intensity in the waning minutes, getting five shots on frame, but Ursinus senior goalie Jill Lukens stopped all of them. William Smith's best chance to tie came in the penultimate minute of the match, when Cappello broke in on goal, firing a long blast from the right wing and batting back her own rebound, but Lukens stood her ground, finishing with 10 saves.

Hare played well for the Herons, finishing with a career-high 12 saves.

Ursinus finished with a 21-18 edge in shots and doubled up William Smith in penalty corners, 18-9.

The Herons return to action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, when they host Cortland State. The Bears play tomorrow, returning to Collegeville, Pa., to take on West Chester.
