Statesmen defeat Wooster and Manhattanville

The Hobart tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. posting a 2-1 record in its final three matches. The Statesmen swept Wooster 9-0, lost 8-1 to Denison, and picked up a 7-2 victory over Manhattanville. Hobart is now 3-4 this season.

On Tuesday, Hobart blanked Wooster. Sophomore Alex James and sophomore Bruce Grant teamed up to defeat their opponents 8-3 at the top doubles spot. Junior Matt Hursh and senior Matt Chin posted an 8-4 win at No. 2, and sophomore Sam DeLuccia and junior Kevin Bates swept their opponents, 8-0 at No. 3.

In singles play, Grant led the Statesmen with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the top spot. Hursh rallied to defeat his Fighting Scots opponent by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2. At No. 3 and No. 5 respectively, DeLuccia and Bates earned 6-3, 6-1 wins. James posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4 and junior Walter Green won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6.

On Thursday, the Statesmen fell to Denison. DeLuccia and Bates paired up to pick up Hobart's lone win at No. 3 doubles.

The following day, the Statesmen triumphed over the Valiants. Chin and Hursh earned an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while Bates and DeLuccia recorded an 8-6 win to go 4-0 at the No. 3 spot on the trip. Hursh and DeLuccia led the way in singles with 6-3, 7-5 wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. James rallied for a close 6-0, 3-6, 10-5 victory at the No. 4 spot. Bates edged his Manhattanville opposition at No. 5 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3), and Green won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

Hobart will be back in action on Wednesday, March 23, when the Statesmen travel to play Nazareth at 4 p.m.
