Herons open league play with St. Lawrence, Clarkson

The William Smith lacrosse team will open Liberty League play this weekend with two games on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. The Herons will host the St. Lawrence University Saints on Friday at 4 p.m., and the Clarkson University Golden Knights will come to Geneva on Saturday at 3 p.m.

William Smith (2-3) is looking to bounce back after a 16-15 loss to Geneseo last Saturday. It was the fourth game the Herons have played this season that was decided by just one goal. William Smith tied the game with 7:50 remaining, but the Blue Knights rallied to score the game-winner with 25 seconds remaining.

Sophomore Marissa Potter leads the Herons with 17 points on 10 goals and a team-high seven assists, after a four-goal, one-assist performance last weekend. Junior Lucy Johnson is right behind her with 12 goals and four helpers for 16 points. Junior Callie Frelinghuysen has scooped up a team-high 15 ground balls and also leads the team with nine caused turnovers. Sophomore Jesse Wilson has started every game in goal for the Herons.

William Smith and St. Lawrence will meet for the 28th time in program history. The Herons hold a 22-5 lead in the all-time series that dates back to 1987. The Saints come to Geneva with a 2-5 record after falling 16-4 to Geneseo on Wednesday. Alanna Piroli leads the team with 12 goals and 16 points. Anna Marchand has played the majority of minutes in goal, and is sporting a 10.89 goals against average and a .444 save percentage.

Clarkson starts off the weekend with a 1-3 record. The Golden Knights will take on Rochester on Friday. Since 2001, the Herons are 10-0 against Clarkson. Alyssa Cristaldi leads the Golden Knights with 15 goals and seven assists for 22 points. Hannah Walters has played all but four minutes in goal and has a 11.69 goals against average and a .495 save percentage.
