Statesmen split two matches in Liberty League Tournament

CANTON, N.Y.—
The Hobart College tennis team defeated sixth-seeded Rensselaer 5-4, and lost to second-seeded Vassar 9-0 on the first day of the 2011 Liberty League Tournament hosted by St. Lawrence today. The third-seeded Statesmen are now 10-10 overall.

In their first match of the day, Hobart came out of doubles play with two points. Senior Matt Chin and junior Matt Hursh paired up for an 8-5 win at No. 2. Junior Kevin Bates and sophomore Sam DeLuccia teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 3.

In singles, Hursh cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rensselaer's Andre Vorbrodt at No. 2. DeLuccia also earned his second win of the day 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. At No. 6, junior Walter Green breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

After the win, the Statesmen advanced to take on Vassar. The Statesmen fell 9-0, but there were a number of close matches. At No. 2 singles, Hursh was edged 7-6, 2-6, 10-4. At No. 3 DeLuccia also lost a tight match 6-4, 5-7, 10-8. Vassar's Dan Freeman came out on top of sophomore Alex James in another battle at No. 4, 4-6, 6-0, 10-5.

Hobart will play St. Lawrence tomorrow at 10 a.m. to determine who takes third place in the Liberty League Tournament.
