#5 Cortland defeats William Smith

CORTLAND, N.Y.—
The fifth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-1 lead and went on to defeat William Smith 17-7 in a non-league game played this afternoon. The Red Dragons stretched their win streak to seven games, and are now 9-1 overall. The Herons are now 4-4 this season.

Lindsay Abbott led Cortland with a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. Maria Di Fato registered four goals, two assists, seven ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Jordan Miller scored three goals, and Ashley Cook chipped in two goals and two assists.

Erin Koller added two goals and an assist, while Mary Hartzheim had a goal and two helpers. Ally Levy stopped nine shots for the Red Dragons to earn the win.

Junior Lucy Johnson led the Herons with two goals, six ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Junior Katherine Vesce and senior Cassie Findlay contributed a goal and an assist apiece. Sophomore Jesse Wilson made four saves in 39:49. First-year Maggie McNair came in to play 20:11 and stopped two shots.

The Red Dragons immediately jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 2:40. Abbott scored first just 1:58 seconds in. Just 42 seconds later Maria Di Fato found the back of the net. Sophomore Marissa Potter put the Herons on the scoreboard 9:06 in. Then Cortland rattled off the next four goals for a 6-1 advantage. Abbott logged a goal and two assists in the spurt. Koller started off the run. Hartzheim and Abbott added goals just 31 seconds apart, and Cook capped the run with 11:49 on the clock.

Findlay cut the Red Dragons lead to four with her 10th goal of the season with 5:28 left in the opening half. However, Di Fato collected a pass from Cook and tallied with 1:55 remaining to give Cortland back a five goal advantage at halftime.

Johnson scored just 50 seconds into the second half to make it 7-3. Vesce set up the play. Just 15 seconds later, Koller found the back of the net for the second time to push the Cortland lead back to five. Johnson then tallied for the second time to make it 8-4. Her initial shot was saved, but she was able to scoop up the ball and fire a second shot into the back of the net 2:14 in.

Cook registered her second goal of the day, and Miller scored to make it 10-4. Vesce made it 10-5 7:11 into the second. Findlay was credited with the assist. The Red Dragons then went on a 6-0 run to make it 16-5. DiFato and Miller scored twice, and Abbott recorded her third goal of the day. A goal by Gina Campese capped the run.

Sophomore Emily Leahy scored her third goal of the season with 3:52 remaining to make it 16-6. With 1:27 on the clock, Taylor Harney scored a free position goal, and with just 24 seconds left in regulation, sophomore Kathleen Ragan scored a free position goal for William Smith for the final. It was her 11th goal this year.

The Red Dragons out-shot the Herons, 31-29. William Smith held a slight 22-21 edge in ground balls. Each team won 13 draw controls. The Herons were successful on 12 out of 20 clear attempts, while Cortland was successful 16 out of 19 times.

The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, April 9 when they host Rochester for a Liberty League game at 2 p.m.
