Statesmen split two matches at Flower City Tournament

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—
The Hobart tennis team split a pair of close matches in the first day of the 2011 Flower City Tournament. The Statesmen defeated Rensselaer 5-4 this morning, and dropped their second match of the day 5-4 to Roberts Wesleyan.

Against RPI, Hobart came out of doubles play with two wins. Junior Sam DeLuccia and first-year Michael Fields picked up an 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot, and the duo of senior Matt Hursh and first-year Matthew Massey earned an 8-3 win at No. 3.

In singles, the Statesmen picked up wins at No. 6, No. 5 and No. 4, in that order, to secure the victory. Finishing up first in singles play was Massey who defeated RPI's Kyle Burton 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6. Fields also earned his second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5. James sealed the victory for Hobart with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Andre Vorbrodt at the No. 4 spot.

This afternoon against Roberts Wesleyan, the Raiders came out on top 2-1 after doubles play. The Statesmen's lone win came at No. 3. Hursh and Massey defeated German Michaylyszyn and Emanual Rauchie 8-5.

In singles action, the Statesmen started strong evening things out when James secured a close 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot. Roberts Wesleyan answered with victories at Nos. 2 and 3 to take back an overall 4-3 lead. Fields proved Hobart would not go away quietly with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 5 spot, however the Raiders earned the victory at No. 1 to secure the win. Massey earned his fourth win of the day defeating Jordan Sadowitz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 11, when they take on the University of Rochester at 9 a.m. fighting for a third place finish in the tournament.
