BOX SCORE
GENEVA, N.Y.—Jocelyn Novak's unassisted goal in the 19th minute proved to be all the offense Lebanon Valley needed as the Flying Dutchmen upset 14th-ranked William Smith 1-0 in the finale of the William Smith Field Hockey Classic.
Standing in the middle of the circle, Novak drove a shot just inside the right post to give her side a 1-0 lead at the 18:13 mark.
LVC got the better of the Herons in terms of time of possession and owned a 10-5 edge in shots and a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners, but the match was played largely in the midfield.
William Smith's best scoring chances came early and late. The Herons got off a pair of rapid-fire shots in the match's fourth minute, but goalie Christine Poletti stopped both offerings. As the match headed into the final 11 minutes, William Smith's sense of urgency earned the team a couple of penalty corners. On one, first-year
Sarah Tompson laced a shot on frame, only to see Poletti make a brilliant kick save to preserve the shutout.
Poletti finished the match with five saves, while Heron netminder
Taryn Little turned back a season-high six shots.
The win was Lebanon Valley's third in a row. The Dutchmen, who were ranked fifth in the preseason coaches poll, opened the campaign with three straight losses, all against ranked foes.
The loss was the first of the year for William Smith, which slips to 6-1.
The Herons will begin Liberty League play at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, when they visit No. 5 Skidmore. LVC will return home for its next match against Haverford at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22.
