CARLISLE, Pa.—The Hobart football team's offense produced 500 yards and the defense managed five takeaways and three stops in the red zone as the Statesmen rolled to a 33-9 season-opening victory at Dickinson this afternoon. 

Hobart picked up 313 yards on the ground, including 87 from junior running back Bobby Dougherty, 71 from sophomore running back Steven Webb, 61 from first-year running back Alex Furtado, and 21 from junior quarterback Nick Strang. Each member of that quartet also reached the end zone.

Through the air, Strang was 13-of-25 for 187 yards and a touchdown. Senior Garth Muratori was his top target, pulling in seven passes for 127 yards and a TD.

Defensively, 22 different Statesmen were credited with tackles led by senior Reggie Robinson and sophomore Kevin Hearon, who both finished with eight stops.Sophomores Connor Garrett and Devin Worthington each produced an interception.

The season got off to an inauspicious start, when Hobart fumbled way the snap on the day's first play from scrimmage. The defense bailed out the offense with a goal line stand. Dane Wilcoxen and Troy Johnson stuffed Mike Shimkin (10 rush, 35 yds) on fourth and goal from the Hobart 1.

The Statesmen then proceeded to march 99 yards in 10 plays to produce the season's first points. Hobart got out of the shadow of the goal posts when Strang hit Muratori for 29 yards on the second play of the drive. The duo hooked up again for the 31-yard touchdown play.

After another bend-don't-break performance by the D that halted Dickinson on fourth and 1 from the Hobart 15. Strang hit Muratori on first down for a 26-yard gain and six plays later, Dougherty broke away for a 28 yard touchdown and a 14-0 first quarter advantage.

Early in the second quarter, Garrett's interception set up Strang's 11-yard scoring run and a 21-0 lead. Dickinson lost a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but the Statesmen were unable to capitalize. The Red Devils marched back down the field and nearly scored, but Ricky Martz (5-9-1, 46 yds) hit Cam Di Fede (8 rec, 81 yds) for 14 yards only to watch him fumble the ball into the end zone. Hobart recovered for a touchdown, ending Dickinson's best scoring opportunity of the half.

Worthington's pick ended the first drive of the second half and set the stage for another Hobart scoring drive. Webb's 3-yard scamper capped a 10-play, 67-yard march. Hobart missed the extra point, snapping a string of 43 consecutive makes dating back to Oct. 31, 2009.

It wasn't until early in the fourth quarter when Dickinson made its way across the goal line. A 13-play, 70-yard drive ended with a 15-yard connection between Todd Smolinsky (13-22-1, 121, TD) and Matt Wood (2 rec, 19 yds, TD).

The Statesmen kept the ball on the ground on its final scoring drive, rushing 11 times for 73 yards. Furtado punched the ball into the end zone on a 1-yard plunge.

Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when the Statesmen visit St. John Fisher. Kickoff at Growney Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
