GENEVA, N.Y.—In weather that was only fit for a duck, it was the William Smith Herons flying by the Elmira Soaring Eagles 7-0 in a non-conference field hockey match at McCooey Field tonight. Seven different Herons accounted for the goals, while junior Annie Kietzman logged a game-high four points on a goal and two assists.

In precipitation that ranged from a light mist to an outright downpour, William Smith (3-0) totally controlled the match. The Herons outshot their guests 42-3 and had a 16-2 advantage in penalty corners.

In the third minute, Kietzman opened the scoring off an assist by sophomore Melanie O'Connor. Exactly five minutes later, sophomore Amy David sticked home a feed from Kietzman for a 2-0 lead. In the 14th minute, sophomore Margaret McConnell drove a shot toward the left post that an Eagle defender accidentally swept into her own cage. Just over a minute later, William Smith was awarded a penalty stroke after an Elmira defender used her body to stop a shot and prevent a goal. Junior Sara Helmer converted with a low shot to the left corner, giving the Herons a 4-0 lead.

First-year Kendra Napierala joined the scoring parade in the 22nd minute, netting her first collegiate goal and sending William Smith into halftime with a 5-0 advantage.

In the 53rd minute, Sophomore Taylor Cappello batted home a rebound after starting goalie, sophomore Lauren Thomas turned back an offering by Kietzman. It was Cappello's team-leading sixth goal of the year.

First-year Sarah Tompson completed the scoring with a blast from the top of the circle. The penalty corner goal, her first collegiate tally, was assisted by Kietzman and sophomore Julia Simmons.

Junior goalie Taryn Little made one save in each half to earn the shutout. Thomas logged 20 saves in just over 57 minutes of work, while first-year Brooke Ramage made two stops in relief for Elmira (0-1).

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10, when the Herons visit Oneonta State. The Soaring Eagles will be back in action on the same day at Wheaton (Mass.). Both matches are scheduled to being at 7 p.m.
