Herons to face Redhawks in Wendy's College Classic opener

William Smith College will host a doubleheader in the first round of the 47th annual Wendy's College Classic on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The host Herons will take on Roberts Wesleyan at 8 p.m. with the University of Rochester squaring off with RIT at 6 p.m.

Tickets for the doubleheader can be purchased in Bristol Gym on Tuesday. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students, children and veterans. Proceeds from the tournament will help benefit The B. Thomas Golisano Hope Lodge, which provides free temporary lodging for cancer and trauma patients and their caregivers.

William Smith is 1-1 with a 66-52 win over Potsdam State. Senior guard Sydni Salvatore leads the Herons in scoring, 13.5 ppg, and boasts team highs of nine assists, seven steals, and five 3-pointers made. Sophomore forward Chloe Hayter is second in the scoring column with 12.0 ppg. Sophomore forward Molly Breen leads the team on the glass, averaging 7.5 rpg.

The Redhawks (3-1) are coming off a 70-51 win over Houghton. First-year forward Samantha Courtney leads the team in scoring and rebounding, producing 13.8 ppg and 8.5 rpg. Senior forward Brittany Williams is adding 12.5 ppg and 5.0 rpg.

This will be the first meeting between William Smith and Roberts Wesleyan since 1999 (a 70-51 win by the Redhawks) and the first contest between the two schools in Geneva since 1990 (a 71-57 win by the Herons).

The winner of the Herons/Redhawks game will play the winner of the Nazareth/Geneseo at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Rochester, while the winner of Rochester/RIT, will play the winner of Fisher/Brockport at 8 p.m. at the U of R.

Consolation games will take place at Geneseo on Thursday at 6 and 8 p.m. and on Saturday at Nazareth College.

The third place game will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, while the championship will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at Rochester.
