Heron squash posts 1-3 record at Wesleyan Round Robin

The William Smith squash team posted a 1-3 record in the 2012 Wesleyan Round Robin played in Middletown, Conn., this weekend. The Herons, who are ranked No. 27 in the most recent College Squash Association Rankings, are now 4-4 overall.

William Smith dropped their first two matches both by a score of 5-4 to No. 17 Mount Holyoke and No. 25 Wellesley on Saturday. Against Lyons, Anne Habecker picked up a win at No. 5, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5. Sophomore Molly Doran earned a 11-4, 11-9, 11-5 win at No. 7, and junior Nellie Lindecke posted a 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 victory at No. 8. First-year Erin Casey topped her opponent11-6, 11-4, 11-6 at No. 9.

Against the Blue, the Herons picked up wins at the top four spots. First-year Rachel Newman led William Smith with an 11-9, 11-3, 11-9 win at the top spot. Sophomore Andrea Tran registered an 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 victory at No. 2, and senior Olivia Beckwith came out on top at No. 3 (5-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8). At No. 4, senior Courtney Leous edged her Wellesley opponent, 11-9, 4-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-3.

On Sunday, the Herons fell 8-1 to No. 18 Wesleyan in their first match. Newman picked up William Smith's lone win, topping Grace Zimmerman 11-3, 8-11, 11-2, 11-5 at No. 1.

William Smith finished out the round robin with a 9-0 sweep of No. 34 Smith. Newman notched a 3-11, 11-4, 11-7, 2-11, 11-7 win at the top spot. Tran earned an 11-4, 9-11, 13-11, 11-4 victory at No. 2. At No. 3, Beckwith logged an 11-4, 11-9, 11-7 triumph, and at No. 4 Leous rallied for an 11-13, 11-6, 11-7, 11-4 win. Habecker cruised to an 11-1, 11-4, 11-3 win at No. 5, and first-year Justine Shank posted an 11-3, 11-3, 11-5 win at No. 6. Doran recorded an 11-6, 11-4, 11-4 triumph at No. 7. Lindecke registered an 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 win at No. 8, and Casey picked up a win by default at No. 9 to round out the sweep.

The Herons will be back in action Jan. 26-26 when they compete in the Smith Round Robin.
